From the first week of April, the Government of Tamilnadu has started issuing new smart ration cards to all the family card holders. The smart cards will be linked to the resident’s Aadhar card number.

A staff at the office of the assistant commissioner, TN Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection department, at Mylapore says, “The process of issuing smart cards to Mylapore residents has begun. We hope to cover all the residents in a week”.

He explains the process, “Once the card is ready, the resident will receive an SMS on his registered phone number with the address of the ration shop at which the card can be collected. The resident must take the old ration card with him too. Once the old ration card and the details in it have been verified, the new card will be activated”.

Residents who have their old ration cards need not apply for the smart card. They will be issued smart cards. Residents who are applying for the first time and those who have lost their old ration cards or possess damaged ones should apply for a new card online at the website www.tnpds.gov.in.  “The status of an application can also be checked online”, said the staff member.

The family card holders should ensure that their phone number has been provided, added the staff.

The details in the old ration card and the Aadhar card will be reflected in the smart card. Those who haven’t registered their phone number or need to change their phone number can do so at the office of the Civil Supplies assistant commissioner located at 4, Venkatesa Agraharam Street, Mylapore. (East of Saibaba Temple). Ph. 24642613.

Residents can also call the toll free number 1967 or 18004255901 for enquiries.
