Vaigasi fests at Mada streets

The Mada Streets light up during the Tamil month of Vaigasi.

Two temples have grand events during this month, Sri Velleeswarar Temple at South Mada Street, Mylapore and Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.

The brahmotsavam celebrations at Sri Velleeswarar Temple ended on a spirited and festive note. Hundreds were seen taking part in the thirukalyanam utsavam (seen in the picture) held on Saturday, May 18 evening. Barricades were set up inside the temple to control the crowd and policewomen were seen watching over as the rituals were being held.

In a corner of the temple, offerings of coconut, flowers and other pooja items were piled high and volunteers were seen sorting out the same.

At Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore the three day Vaigasi Vishakam festival ended on Monday, May 20.

Srikanth, a volunteer at the temple says, “More than 10000 lamps were lit around the temple tank in the evening. About 25 volunteers got together to make this happen”.

“We start planning a few days before and first take out the lamps and clean them. On all the three days of the fest we assemble at the temple at around 4 p.m. It takes about two hours for us to complete the lighting process”.
