New garbage clearing agency begins operations, in south end of R. A. Puram

The new agency contracted by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to collect and clear garbage in many zones of the city has started its work in one ward of Mylapore which falls under the GCC Adyar zone – ward 173. ( areas around R K Nagar and KVB Gardens colonies in R A Puram).

Operations began in Adyar zone on October 1 when the chief minister launched the new facility.

The same day, workers of the new agency were seen cleaning the streets in R. K. Nagar in south R. A. Puram. ( seen in the photo used here)

Urbaser Summet, the new agency has placed garbage bins at street corners, in some places two bins. It is using electric three-wheelers to transport waste locally.  Men and women have been equipped to clean the streets in each ward.

Workers of the agency are also asking residents in independent houses and apartment blocks to use three bins – preferably different coloured ones or red, blue and green ones, asking residents to segregate waste in their premises; this will be cleared by the civic workers when they stop at every gate daily and transfer this into three-wheelers .

Source segregation is being promoted rightaway but on a voluntary basis. However, people continue to dump their waste into the large bins kept at street corners.

The agency says all of Mylapore which falls under Teynampet zone of GCC will see operations in the weeks ahead.
