A prayer to the sea, on tsunami anniversary

Over fifty people, mostly members of the fisherfolk living in areas like Nochi kuppam and Nochi Nagar took out a procession this morning from Marina Loop Road to the seashore and said a prayer to mark the 18th anniversary of the tsunami which swamped this region and left many dead.

Mylapore MLA Dha Velu joined the procession as did IAS officer J. Radhakrishnan who was travelling this way at that time.

On the shore, people prayed and then offered milk, pouring it into the sea.

This is an annual ritual now and this morning, at other other points along the seashore, events were organised by the BJP and Congress parties’ local units.
