Young Akshara V. Ganesh did a good, useful turn this summer holiday for the children of the community at Rani Meyyammai Towers in MRC Nagar where she too resides.
This Grade X student at Harishree Vidyalayam conducted a week-long summer camp for 15 girls .aged 8 – 11 yrs focused on STEM topics ( themes on science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at her apartment from May 1 to 5.
Akshara picked various STEM topics for girls to appreciate and enjoy science and math so they can develop an interest for STEM careers.
Akshara says she chose topics that would interest the girls every day (some of the topics this year were – Brilliant Bio, Cool Chem & Physics, Astronomy, Fun with Math and Eco Crafts).
Once she finalised the topics, she says she researched online and planned out each day to the hour – filled with discussion ideas, activities, crafts etc. so that it was an experiential learning for the girls.
Akshara says this was not only a worthwhile way to spend her time in summer, but to exercise skills of leadership, planning in detail and creativity to plan interesting activities.
For the little ones, it was a fun environment to spend time learning and having a fun time with their friends.
