Monsoon: P. S. Sivaswami Salai area suffers the most. Help arrives very late. After people protest

If there is one area which turned into hell of the worst order this past week in the monsoon, it was the P S Sivaswami Salai region.

The cruelest part of this issue was that civic agencies know well that this area floods dangerously everytime it rains heavily.

Yes, new drains have been laid in the Vivekananda College zone but the past week’s flooding showed they did not help channel water.

Hundreds of families of this area began to scream and make SOS calls and seek help that was slow in coming even 48 hours after the peak rainfall.

People said they did not sight the MLA or area councillor or GCC senior officer; they were left to fend for themselves.

On Wednesday, some residents came out on to Royapettah High Road and staged a protest. They blocked traffic. The agitation brought the police and the Mylapore MLA who promised to rush motors to pump out the water.

Inside an hour, Disaster Mission staff arrived with boats and began to evacuate people who wished to move out.

But the stagnant water remained.
