Monsoon: power black-out for long hours frustrates Mylaporeans, pains seniors and the sick

The biggest issue that bugged Mylaporeans this past week was the power supply suspension which lasted between 3 days in some areas to 48 hours in some other.

Be it in Abiramapuram and Alwarpet, Mylapore or Luz, the inner colonies and those that fringe the seaside, power was not restored long after the rain had stopped.

State officials said the supply was  being held back to prevent untoward incidents if wires / cables had snapped into stagnant water which had not been cleared in many areas.

Since power was out, people couldn’t use lifts to shop or get away to a dry place; power banks were exhausted as were smartphones; Net connections were dead, water could not be pumped up for personal use . .

When the rain took a break, lots of people rushed to local area petrol bunks to buy fuel in cans to feed their campus generators. At a bunk on St. Mary’s Road, an attendant said that fuel was yet to arrive and that small quantities were being sold.

Power began to be restored by Wednesday morning / noon. But areas located off R H Road and the Canal where water stagnated over a large area, power was not restored. And the frustration of these people led to a massive protest on Wednesday night.
