Vasant Utsav dance fest at Sri Kapali Temple features best artistes. Starts May 1

Vasant Utsav, an annual dance festival, starts on May 1 evening at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore.

The formal event is at 5.30 p.m. with Justice C. Nagappan the chief guest, A few artistes will be honoured.

Then follows the first recital at 7 p.m.- dancer-teacher Roja Kannan presents one of the Kapali pancharatnams written and composed by the daughter of Papanasam Sivan, Dr.Rukmani Ramani and the classic Poompavai pathigam of Gnanasambandar.

Said Roja Kannan in a social media post, ‘Am at this Utsav after 17 years. Performed in 2009 with my guru Adyar K. Lakshman wielding the cymbals.’

The Utsav is curated by former IAS officer C. K. Gariyali, is dedicated to Ravi Gariyali and is held annually in May.

There are two dance recitals daily, up to May 10, the first at 5.45 p.m. featuring solos/ small groups and large groups at the  7 .15 p.m. concerts.

The line-up includes dancers of  Gopika Varma, Hemalatha Ramachandran, Srekala Bharath, Sahita Basu Ghosh, Jigyasa Giri and Vempati Chinna Satyam academy’s dancers.
