Well-known theatre and film artiste who is popularly called Sachu, though her name is Saraswathi, was decorated with the Iyakkunar Sigaram K. Balachander Award on July 14 evening at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.
Arts promoter Nalli Kuppuswami did the honours in the presence of N. Ravi, Chairman, Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra, K N Ramaswamy, the kendra’s head and theatreperson TV Varadarajan besides Bhavan’s deputy director K. Venkitachalam..
The award, instituted by artiste ‘Kavithalayaa’ Krishnan celebrates the life and work of late theatre and film person, K. Balachander.
It is given at the launch of Bhavan’s annual drama festival which ran till July 17.
Sachu had lots of anecdotes to share with the guests at the event – of early days spent off R. K. Mutt Road, her passion for dance, her entry into cinema as child actor and her long career in films, especially those directed by K. Balachander.
