The annual Panniru Thirumurai festival has started on August 11 at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore. It will go on till August 23.
The focus is on the recitation of the Tamil sacred hymns written by Saivite saints in praise of lord Shiva.
On the opening evening, following a Nageswaram concert by SRGS Mohandoss and artistes, odhuvar P. Sargurunathan led the first Thirumurai recitation, alongside other artistes.
This was followed by a sorpozhivu ( discourse) by an expert.
Daily, August 12 onwards, there is Thirumurai isai 5 pm onwards by an odhuvar and ’sorpozhivu’ ( discourse), 7 pm onwards – open to all.
On the final day of this celebration, Sunday, August 23 the Panniru Thirumurai will be taken out in a procession on the elephant vahanam in the morning; and in the evening, abhishekam will be performed for the four Saivite saints – Thirugnana-sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar ( Appar), Sundarar and Manickkavasagar – and they will be taken out in a procession through the made streets.
