Pattinapakkam ( Foreshore Estate) has been chosen by the Tamil Nadu government to built a new Assembly and Secretariat.
25.55 acres of land which was under Chennai Corporation and TN Housing Board is to be used to build a multi-storeyed complex. It will cover about 20 lakh square feet.
The budget for this project is Rs.1,200 crores.
The Public Works Department has been asked to submit a Detailed Project Report ( DPR). Committees are also to be formed to handle the process of seeking architectural designs and deal with the next stages of this massive project.
Currently, the state Assembly and Secretariat functions out of Fort St. George.
After the announcement for the new project was made by chief minister Joseph Vijay, PMK party leader Dr Ambumani Ramadoss and leaders of fisherfolks of this zone have raised objections to the plan.
- Photo shows the area where the proposed project is to come up. It was once a sprawling quarters of TN Secretariat Staff; the blocks were demolished many years ago but redevelopment remained as debates.
- Meanwhile, over the last 7/8 years, this area has become an illegal dump-yard used by civil contractors, private sewage cleaners and others – creating a serious civic issue that has been ignored by state agencies.
