Cleaning up after festivals: RK Mission Home boys lend a hand

Every year, the students of Ramakrishna Mission Home at P. S. Sivaswami Salai, Mylapore volunteer to clean up after major festivals like Kannum Pongal and Arubathimoovar.
This year too, it was no different. More than 285 students and 15 staff members of the polytechnic college inside the home’s campus at P. S. Sivaswami Salai, Mylapore assembled a little after 10 p.m. on March 18 to clean up the Mada Streets, Luz Corner, Venkatesa Agraharam Road and several other street corners.
M. Sukumaran, the principal of the Polytechnic College says, “We have been doing this for five years now. The second and third year students of the college volunteered this year. Corporation staff and Ramky help us out too. We take the necessary cleaning materials such as brooms, steel trays, gloves and masks. The students are also dressed appropriately.  We consolidate the garbage in one location and it is picked up by the Ramky trucks”.

He continues, “It took about two hours for us to clean up the place this year and we collected almost two tons of garbage”.
After Kannum Pongal, they clean the entire stretch of the Marina from Lighthouse to Anna samadhi. More than 400 students and staff volunteer then, he says.
