Ahead of the north-east monsoon season, contract workers of Chennai Corporation have started de-silting stormwater drains in the neighbourhood.
The work is carried out to allow for free flow of water in the drains and to avoid flooding of streets due to overflow and clogging of drains.
This past week, workers were seen removing silt from the drains at Sundareswarar Swamy Street off Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls School in Mylapore.
Said a worker here, “We started desilting, a few days ago at this road. The removed silt will be packed in bags and disposed off at Perungudi dump yard.”
Similar work will be carried out across the area now.
