While national flags were hoisted in some residences and shops, communities held Independence Day events

The focus across some zones of Mylapore may have been on people’s effort to respect the campaign by prime minister Narendra Modi to hoist and fly the national flag for three days ending August 15. There were flags fluttering at the base of the gopurams of Sri Kapali Temple.

In many spaces, small, community-driven Independence Day events were held.

Among these were members of the CIT Colony community curating a string of events in the park and the Rangavalli group of women designing a unique Rangoli here. Vasanth Kumar shared details as  did Gayathri Sankarnarayan.

The Muslim community off Mosque Street near Chitrakulam, Mylapore hoisted the flag and shared sweetmeats with people all around. Community activist C R Balaji shared this news. ( photo below)

Out on the Marina sea-face, in the Nochikuppam colony, following a move by a NGO called Roots, the national flag was unfurled, the local kuppam headman claiming that such an event had never taken place in recent memory. The local councillor, Revathy was present. This news was shared by advocate Auxilia Peter.

Out at the Manasava Apartments on Thiruvengadam Street, families closed in for a snappy event, got it video-recorded and shared on social media. Giridhar Kesavan shared the news from here.

RAPRA, the umbrella body that represents most parts of R A Puram held its own annual show, said its founder Dr Chandrasekaran.

Every year for Independence day and Republic day,  the Jeth Nagar  community gives the honour and platform for senior citizens and decorated citizens to hoist the flag- this morn ing, Sukumaran who retired from IOL and lead the sales and marketing for Nagarjuna Oil Corporation did the honours. Urbaser Sumeet staff who clean the area’s streets were honoured. This was the news from Ravi Nandyala, who heads JERA, the community body.

Meera Rao said that at the Nadu Street space, civci workers were honoured.

The Nursing College at St Isabel’s Hospital campus off Musiri Subramaniam Road always holds colourful events for national days, as they did this Monday morning; the formal march and flag hoisting and snappy culturals. ( photo below)

There was buzz in all local schools, with costume shows of kids dressed in freedom time heroes and heroines; as at Lady Siavswamy Ayyar Girls School ( photo on top) and at Fatima Primary School, managed by and located near Our Lady of Guidance Church, R A Puram.
