Gandhiji statue on Marina may be shifted to new location as Chennai Metro work progresses

The statue of Gandhiji may finally be moved out of its iconic location on the Marina lawns. This has to be done because Chennai Metro’s massive project here – its key underground stations that will serve Phase 2 of the rail line networks – are being constructed.

On Monday, workers at the Chennai Metro site had created a fabric cover all around the statue that stands diagonally opposite the TN Police Headquarters campus and Queen Marys College. Cranes were in place to follow up.

Workers said they had no word on where the statue would be moved to.

The Marina lawns from the QMC end to close to the Light House have been taken over as site work space and barricaded long ago by Chennai Metro.
