Many places in the Mylapore zone are hosting religious-cultural events for Navaratri. Here are basic details on some of them. Mylapore Times will update more events as and when they reach our attention –


SRI DURGA PUJA: AT SRI RAMAKRISHNA MATH

For the Sri Durga Puja festival at the Universal Temple of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, the Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja events are from Oct.20 to 24 and on Oct.28, through the day. Devotees keen to take part in the kum-kum or puspha archanai on Maha Astami and Maha Navami evenings ( 4.15pm, Oct.22 and 23) are asked to be present at 4 pm. CUL-FEST AT BHAVANS

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Chennai Kendra is hosting the ‘Navavidha Navaratri Festival’ from Oct.16 onwards at its auditorium in Mylapore. The core objective of this years’ festival is to foster community engagement and celebrate India’s diverse culture, says the Kendra’s director K. N. Ramaswamy. Dances of Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal and Gujarat and music and bhajan concerts have been lined up. Open to all.

AT SRI KAPALI TEMPLE

The annual Navaratri celebrations at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore will be on from October 15 to 24. Ceremonies will be held every evening, 5 p.m. onwards. Concerts / cultural programmes have not been planned.

AT SRI RAMAKRISHNA MISSION STUDENTS’ HOME

The indoor hall at the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Students Home is always abuzz at Navaratri fest time with pujas, discourses ( held daily at 7.30 a.m.), bhajans and concerts by top-ranking artistes. And all guests get prasadam.  This year’s concerts open on Oct.15 evening and feature Ranjani-Gayathri. Among the shows listed are a Thamizh drama by SBS Creations, ‘Kumin Sirippu’ is on Oct.16, Kalaimamani awardee M. Somasundaram’s Bommalattam show on Oct.19 and The Carnatic Quartet performs classical music on Oct.23.

The fest ends on Oct.24. The large kolu at this venue is set up by the youths at this Home. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti sponsors the fest every year.  This campus adjoins Vivekananda College, Mylapore, off P. S. Sivaswami Salai.

AT NANDALALA CENTRE

Nandalala Cultural Center is celebrating Navarathri in the form of cultural programmes from 15.10.23 to 24.10.23. The Sri Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi puja is at 3 pm on Oct.22. Every evening, there are bhajans/ music concerts at this venue on Dr. Ranga Road ( east end), Mylapore.

EARLY MORNING CONCERTS IN ALWARPET

Sunaadalahari, the musical wing of Indira Ranganathan Trust is organising its 5th edition of this festival season’s music which is titled – Subrabhata Sangeetha Seva.  All concerts start at 5.30 a.m.
The garden space in a bungalow off C P Ramaswamy Road, now with roofing,  is filled with oil-lit kuthuvilakkus and only this light illuminates the space where the artiste performs.
Rasikas are welcome to come by and listen.
Vocalist D B Ashwin performed on the first morning of this festival.
