People, priests hold Mahalaya amavasai rituals on sidewalk of R. K. Mutt Road. Traffic jams.

On the occasion of Mahalaya amavasai, many areas around the tank of Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore were packed with people since 6 a.m. this Saturday.

They were here to perform the day’s rituals – offer prayers for those who have moved on and seek grace.

Since the temple authorities have continued to debar people from conducting the rituals on the steps of the temple tank, people crowded on the pavements off R K Mutt Road and conducted the rituals.

This led to a severe traffic jam. As late as 8.30 a.m. buses, cars and bikes were seen caught in the jams on this road.
