The TASMAC liquor vending shop on V. K. Road, Mandaveli has been shut on May13 evening.
This follows the state’s decision to close over 700 such shops which were located at spaces close to hospitals/schools/ temples.
This shop had opened for sales at 12 noon. The staff received the ‘shut down’ order after 3 pm; the stocks were sold and by 6 p.m. the shop was shut.
As regular clients walked up late evening, they were told to retracce their steps by local men.
Mylaporeans had run a long drawn campaign asking the state to shut this shop; since it was located off a temporary, narrow pathway linking two busy roads, off the barricaded Chennai Metro work zone, women and children faced many uneasy moments here.
Women had even staged protests here.
