Mylapore resident Swaminathan N. has won the silver medal at the Indian national deaf chess championship held in New Delhi. This was his first-ever tournament in the Persons with Disabilities (Deaf) category.
With this achievement, he has been selected to represent India at the world deaf chess championship in Innsbruck, Austria, and the Pan Asian deaf chess championship.
Before competing in the PWbD category, Swaminathan had represented Chennai in the Open category, winning silver in the Chennai district championship and securing 6th place in the Tamil Nadu state championship in his age category.
Swaminathan was introduced to chess at the age of six by his mother, N. Meenakshi, who runs the Mylapore Chess Academy at 15/8, Musiri Subramaniam Road, Mylapore
