State Bank’s staff arrested for swindling money deposited by cathedral

City Crime Branch police have arrested a bank employee at State Bank of India’s MRC Nagar branch for committing  a fraud with the bank deposits held by San Thome Cathedral.

Raji Rao is said to have swindled Rs.2.3 crores of the cathedral’s fixed deposit by pre-closing the FDs without the knowledge of the account holder, channeling them to a few current accounts and finally into an account she held.

The bank’s manager and the priest at the cathedral had lodged a complaint with the police and Raji was arrested by the police on Thursday; she has been remanded to judicial custody.

Police said Raji had forged the signature of the account holder to swindle the money.
