Festoons on beachside for launch of World Chess Championship

One stretch of the Marina Beach roadside is decked up for the biggest sporting event to be held in this city – the FIDE World Chess Championship.

From the Gandhi statue end and northwards, a variety of buntings, flags and bill boards now greet motorists.

Cutouts of the King piece and giant models of the same adorn the lamp posts and pavements of the beach stretch.

The ubiquitous red, white and black buntings are the decorations of the ruling AIADMK party whose leader and state chief minister J Jayalalithaa has fully backed this prestigious sport event.

The formal inauguration of the championship is this evening ( Nov.7) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the matches start on Saturday at a seven star hotel in the city.
