Monsoon; ground report from one Mylapore zone on Thursday morning

We went out on our rounds of Mylapore this Thursday morning and this is what we observed –

  1. Nageswara Rao Park, Luz – water was still stagnant all over but at a very low level; much of it drained. Workers were seen clearing fallen foliage and trees / branches of trees.
  2. 2. Lots of chopped avenue trees were seen dumped on the sides of Luz Church Road; yet to be cleared

3. At the P S Sivaswami Salai – Royapettah High Road junction; water level on the Sivaswami Salai has reduced but not all that much. Motors are being used to pump this water into the drain on the opposite side, that runs down Balakrishnan Salai and one assumes, empties into the Buckingham Canal. Mylapore MLA Dha Velu was seen overseeing the operations. All shops on the Salai have been closed for past 4 days now. Could not ascertain if all residents had evacuated – using boats or otherwise.

4. Kailasapuram is a densely inhabited colony of middle and poor sections, located behind Citi Centre mall, off Dr R K Salai. The lanes were dry.

5. The section of Buckingham Canal off Dr R K Salai was full of water and it was flowing on

6. Densely inhabited areas like Meenambal Puram which lies behind Citi Centre, off Ambedkar Bridge were dry.

7.  Power had been restored last night to areas like Veeraperumal Koil Street, off R H Road. Residents of this and other areas staged a protest last night at Luz Circle.

8. The waters in the Buckingham Canal around Kutchery Road were full of garbage – plastics, cardboard and more and so water flow was slow.
