Obituary; vidwan Vellore Lakshminarayanan

Vidwan Vellore Lakshminarayanan passed away on Oct.25.

Born on 17.07.1929, he was undoubtedly one of the senior most musicians, whom the world of Carnatic music has lost.

His elder brother Ramamurthy was also a good musician. In fact, together they were known as the Vellore Brothers.

Lakshminarayanan had training in Carnatic music under Chittoor Ramachandran and Chittoor Subramaniam Pillai. He was such an accomplished tambura artist that he was sought after by many leading musicians.

He was equally a good flautist and kanjira player. His varied interest and expertise in vocal and instrumental music helped him to put forth his best skill in Tambura support. In these days, where the electronic tambura has taken the centre stage, Lakshminarayanan stood out distinctly as the artiste whose adherence to music tradition was adorable.

There have been tambura artistes who would at times seek the help of the vocalist to tune the instrument. But in the case of Lakshminarayanan, the musicians could be really be so sure of the sruti alignment that they could easily move into octaves and other nuances of svaras.
His playing on the flute was also soft and mellifluous
He trained many students in Carnatic music. He was also an active participant in bhajans, particularly the Chaitanya Bhajan Mandali.
Mylaporeans would have seen him often going around on his bicycle. Even at the age of 93.
He is survived by his wife, and daughter, who is also a music teacher and her family.
His family resides at Brindavan Street,Mylapore. Phone :9094049122
– Tribute by Dr. C. S. Radhakrishnan, professor of Sanskrit, Pondichéry University
