Asha Vijayaraghavan (19 July 1955 – 1 May 2026), former judicial member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), passed away on May 1.
Over a distinguished career spanning nearly a decade on the ITAT (2007–2017), she served in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, contributing significantly to tax jurisprudence.
Known for her clarity of thought and balanced judgments, she sat on several important benches, including the Special Bench and the International Taxation Bench, with many of her orders widely reported in leading tax publications.
Born into a family deeply rooted in law and academia, she was the daughter of the eminent tax expert K.R. Ramamani and educationalist Hemalata Ramamani.
She pursued mathematics at Stella Maris College and later obtained her law degree from Madras Law College, going on to practise as a tax advocate in Chennai for over two decades.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Asha Vijayaraghavan was actively engaged in educational, agricultural, cultural, and charitable initiatives.
She contributed to institutions such as the National Agro Foundation and the Chellamal Education Society, and played a key role in rural education through the RMT School.
A trained Carnatic music enthusiast and a student of Indian philosophy, she also founded the RMT Vaishnava Sabha.
She is survived by her husband R. Vijayaraghavan, noted tax advocate, and their children, Vikram Vijayaraghavan and Mridula Anand.
